Fashion Shows

Fashion shows are usually put on by fashion designers with the intention of promoting ther clothing and accessories which are worn by models on the catwalk. The first exhibition of such a show goes back to the 1900’s in New York. Back then, the purpose was to spark the female shopper’s curiosity in the latest Parisian fashion creations. This was happening in 1903 and by 1920 all over the United States themed fashion shows were taking place, often narrated.

Later on fashion shows specialized more and more, becoming a display of art, accompanied by impressive decorations and especially selected music to blend with the presentation and the complex stages.

Since the 1970s fashion weeks are organized, events that focus on presenting the latest designs from all over the world, from the most successful, popular and most acclaimed houses. These fashion shows happen in fashion capitals like New York, Milan, Paris, Rome, Tokyo and London. Many other fashion weeks are put on throughout the year in many other cities with the scope of promoting unknown but promising designers.

A fashion trend is presented each season which means fashion shows often take place from January until March and from September until November. These allow designers to inform retailers and the general public on the available trends for the next upcoming season in time for them to decide what to purchase and buy respectively.

Journalists, celebrities and photographers and other designers are invited to fashion shows, making them real entertainment programs. Because of the high interest in fashion, fashion channels are available for the general public, so you can have a runaway presentation in the intimacy of your home. You can choose from specific fashion shows with clothes ready t wear (prĂȘt-a-porter), bridal fashion (for brides only), haute-couture or swimwear fashion.

Fashion shows are glamorous events that are regularly associated with charity events and special exhibitions of accessories and cosmetics. These are occasions for famous designer schools to participate in. Most acclaimed fashion shows – specifically Fashion Weeks - take place in New York, Paris, London, Milan, London, Los Angeles and Rome and bring together a myriad of celebrities, supermodels, designers and fashion magazine editors, with a massive media coverage.

Fall Fashion Trends

2007 fall fashion trends were marked by clothes that inspire you to gear up for combat, to camouflage and protect yourself in earth colored fabrics. Gray is a predominant shade, the design are masculine inspired, the accessories in majority gold, textures are mostly tweed, silk, ruffles, feathers, satin, crocodile and, of course, fur. Prints vary from bold modern art prints to polka dots and animal prints. Last but not least, accessories are all oversized: sunglasses, bags, totes, belts; the most popular are long gloves, two-toed thick pumps, thick belts, tights and fishnets, wide rimmed hats and below –knee boots.

In New York, 2007 fall fashion trends were belted coats and tailored dresses, in shades of olive, grey and black that slim down your shape. Although a bit difficult to wear, tweed was of great success. Short tweed jackets with short sleeves in multiple layers are in. Every designer presented oversized sweaters with preeminent knitting. Pants are big, inspired by menswear, some sailor like others sleek stovepipes. Zippers were very popular while hats were wide - brimmed or very low. Shoes were still platform-like but just a little more delicate. Dresses and even shirts were dazzling in sequins and palettes in all colors; evening gowns were marked by feathers in neutral colors. Overall, there was a curious lack of jewelry.

In London ready to wear 2007 fall fashion trends were distinguished through “armor” clothes, with a touch of menswear class, voluminous outfits, in dark shades by massive, shinny metallics, bold prints and fire-red lipstick.

In Paris the trends were more artistically channeled, while in Milan, fur was the star of the show, plus manly pants, fruit tones and bright prints.

By and large, the most popular 2007 fall fashion trends were the grey dresses, menswear inspired class, massive metallics, preeminent prints in vivid colors, large – sized heels and hats, fur and seasonless dressing. As far as haute-couture is concerned 2007 fall fashion trends concentrated on ruffles, lace, armor clothing, huge heels, very well defined waist and fur. The hottest designers setting these trends are Diane von Furstenberg, Armani Prive, Stella McCartney, Marc Jacobs, Chloe, Thakoon, Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior and Azzedine Alaia.

The change from 2006 consisted in orientating more on the feminine silhouette, designers creating tight fitting clothes like the pencil skirt that go perfectly with the oversized tops and hats. The old massive style and the new elegant and refined complement each other in the 2007 fall fashion trends.

Fashion Models

Fashion models are known to promote lines of clothing and accessories for potential customers. The first thing that comes to mind is the catwalk, where fashion shows take place with buyers invited to admire designer’s creations. But modeling does not restrict to that. There is a live show, as mentioned above, but this can also be organized as an exhibition, focusing not only on clothes. Fashion models can promote other products –from vehicles and furniture to household devices – at promotional launches or fairs.

Then there are models that have their pictures taken inside studios or other locations. They film commercials and make TV appearances to promote certain products or to contribute to campaigns. These fashion models are called photographic models. Fashion house models work for designer’s companies, where stylists fit the fabric together on them. These models usually present final products to private customers or journalists.

A fashion model doesn’t need special qualifications but she/he has to be good looking, well proportioned, with a pleasant demeanor. If you look closely, especially at photographic models, each has that “je ne sais quoi” that makes them stand out as beautiful, interesting or captivating. Some models are chosen for certain features like their legs, eyes, hands or hair. Even if you don’t fit the requirements (34-24-34 for females and 38-32 for males) or height (1.72m for females and 1.83m for males) you can successfully become a photographic fashion model.

Most of fashion models start a career at a young age, as early as 13, although it has been disputed using such young models, especially for runaway shows. The career of fashion models is a hard, demanding one that requires them to keep a diet, exercise, travel with the agency and have a busy schedule, starting very early in the morning and finishing late in the night. The glitter and glamour from the outside is built with hard work, self discipline and seriousness, because the product’s presentation depends on the perfect appearance and presence of fashion models. They are the ambassadors of a designer’s line or a company’s cosmetics. They also need to appeal to the common customer – to keep that authenticity of a “real” person.

There are modeling opportunities for people of all sizes: high fashion, glamour petite, plus size, teen or character modeling. Lately, celebrities- movie stars, singers or TV presenters – have been toying with modeling because of their appeal and ability to relate easier to a wider public. Halle Berry (actress), Hillary Duff(actress, singer), Oprah Winfery (TV presenter) are such examples of celebrities that campaign for certain products. The ‘90s represented a peak for professional fashion models, when Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Eva Herzigova or Tyra Banks dedicated themselves exclusively to the fashion industry; they were the legendary supermodels gracing covers like Vogue, Elle or Vanity Fair.

Today there is no clear delimitation for models or celebrity figures. The shift took place from and towards both directions. Models being involved in movie projects or celebrities treated as models have reshaped these industries. Fashion models have been criticized for their slim figures. Some stated that their skinny shapes encourage eating disorders and distort young girls’ image perception of their bodies.

Celebrity Fashion

By definition, celebrities are under constant scrutiny from the media and the fans that adore or hate them. For a public figure, looks is extremely important and contributes to the growth or drop in popularity.

Celebrity fashion is a perfect occasion for media coverage and a source of profit for designers and other fashion oriented industries. Attaching a famous (popular) face to a line of clothing, perfumes or accessories will boost or ruin sales. Some of these celebrities have unique fashion touches that can become easily identifiable and adopted by the masses. Celebrity fashion is so influential because it springs from the fans’ adulation of the fame status.

The person asserts himself/herself as a fashion icon through little details: Nicole Kidman through her vintage brooches, Dita von Teese through her classic ‘50s dresses and pale skin, Jackie Kennedy through her chic fawn coats and pillbox hats, Jennifer Aniston through her silky hair, Jennifer Lopez through her furs and oversized hats, Beyonce through her sparkly, asymmetrically small outfits. Each of them inspires a certain style that will be adopted by those who enjoy it.

In the last years celebrity fashion took a step further, increasing in popularity and availability. Stars have created their personal lines of clothing, reflecting their personal style. Such are Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, supermodel Kate Moss, singer Gwen Stefani, Victoria Beckham and many others. Each has more or less accessible fashion items. For example Victoria Beckham designed jeans from very luxurious Japanese denim that retail at $280. At the other end, Sarah Jessica Parker’s line, called “Bitten”, is specifically made to be widely accessible, with items that do not cross $20 and come in sizes from 0 to 22.

Realizing the importance of a famous face attached to a product, important companies like Coca-Cola, Nike, Apple or L’Oreal convinced stars to endorse their products - because celebrities vouching for the quality of an item will influence the customer’s behavior.

It all adds up to the phenomenon of celebrity fashion that directly affects the public’s choices. By association with the beauty, artistic talents, fame and social impact celebrities and personalities have, people will tend to imitate and adopt.
